Title
Rhinoceros and hippopotamus exhibits at the Chaffee Zoo
Description
Pencil sketch of visitors viewing the rhinoceros and hippopotamus exhibits in the Chaffee Zoo, Fresno California. “The black rhinoceros exhibit is designed to imitate a natural habitat found on the woodland edges of the plains in eastern Africa. A grassy meadow with a water hole is designed to fit among a grove of existing trees along the north edge of the plains exhibit. The normal activity of the rhinos may be observed from a ground level viewing station or from above the elevated ramp that leads to the giraffe feeding station. … The hippopotamus exhibit is dominated by a large pool that includes a beach and a meadow bordered by tall grasses. The visitor will view this habitat from a walkway passing through a marshy area that borders the existing pond in the area. The hippo pool is separated from the walkway by a hidden wall so that the visitor will have a closeup view of animal behavior.” Two colored sketches are derived from this pencil sketch: zoo_cha_sk_07 and zoo_cha_sk_02.
